Its design was inspired by a visit to the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption in San Francisco, where Matthew Hilton was struck by the contrast between the building's heavy concrete structure and the soaring, expansive space within. Mary's Chair captures this same paradox of weight and weightlessness.
